Kigali travel tips
How to get around, when the city slows down and the words that make people smile.
Getting around Kigali
Buses run from the Nyabugogo, Downtown and Remera bus parks; pay with a tap card. Moto taxis are quickest: always wear the helmet and agree the fare first. Taxis and ride apps cost more but suit evenings.
Moto taxi advice
- Always wear the helmet. It's the law, and drivers carry a spare.
- Agree the price first, or use a metered moto app.
- Carry small notes for short hops.
Umuganda
On the last Saturday of each month, 8–11am, the country does community work. Traffic stops and shops open late, so plan a slow morning.

Plastic bags are banned. Dress respectfully at memorials. Around Kwibuka (from 7 April) the country remembers, and the mood is quieter.
Add the wild side
Akagera National Park is two and a half hours east of Kigali, home to lions, elephants, rhinos and giraffes. Easy as a day trip or overnight safari.
