About Map of Kigali

Map of Kigali is a project by Living in Kigali, the guide that has helped people move to, live in and explore Rwanda's capital since 2011.

We made this map because Kigali is easy to love and surprisingly hard to read. The city is spread across dozens of hills, and street names are codes (KN, KG, KK). Most visitors only see a handful of neighbourhoods. So we put the places we actually recommend onto one hand-drawn map, with the local knowledge that usually only gets passed on in person.

Who we are

Living in Kigali was founded by Kirsty Henderson in 2011 as a personal blog to help new arrivals settle in, and grew into one of the best-known resources for life in Rwanda, with a large Facebook community. Since 2023 it has been run as Living In Kigali, LLC, working with Rwandan writers, creators and local businesses.

Who made the map

The map was researched by Richard Rwabutogo, who walked the neighbourhoods, checked the places and gathered the local tips you see on every page.

How we choose places

Everything on the map comes from people who live here: places we use ourselves, and recommendations from our community. We cover all budgets, from street-side brochettes to fine dining, and we update the map when places open, move or close.

Good to know

Opening hours, prices and bus routes change. The map is a guide, not an official transport or planning document, so check details before you travel. Bookings for tours open on our partner's site.
